The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
